The whisky lounge. York festival

Saturday 12th September ( 2015 ) gave us the latest instalment of the whisky lounge, the Yorkshire whisky festival. This was their 13th festival in the York area and again was a sell out event. The atmosphere was buzzing and the whisky was  pouring ( fast)  plenty of people were getting to taste new whisky and many were going back to old favourites. It was nice to see a couple of new distilleries represented, kingsbarns and the lakes distillery had liquid to sample, the new make from kingsbarns shows some promise, some really nice floral notes and a lovely fresh fruity flavour.. As for the lakes distillery they had a blended offering (the one)  at first tasting it seems like a good blend, I will re sample later and post some notes..  The usual old favourites were there, Colin Dunn on the Diageo stand was his usual self, full of enthusiasm and Whitt..

The chaps on the glenlivet / aberlour stand were also great to chat to, full of knowledge… The show again used the token scheme  to get some better drams, most of the stands had a couple of better whiskys to sample, some didn’t use the scheme and just let you sample what they had. The biggest let down to this token swop was the stand with my beloved Auchentoshan, I was amazed when asked for a black token in order to taste the threewood… Does this stand up to others like Talisker 25, Dalwhinnie 25, ancnoc 22 , and Balblair 1990 ? .. Anyway it was great to talk to so many people and hear their thoughts, many had favourites and there was so many sampling whiskys for the first time.. The crowd looked to be a good mix of ages and the really good thing was the amount of females enjoying the whisky,

listening to their thoughts was interesting, many liked the rugged strong flavours of the islay malts with a few preferring the more delicate flavours..

A lot of the people I spoke to picked drams like Talisker 25, Dalwhinnie 25 and an Arran 18 from Douglas Laing as their favourites, myself I found the mortlach  25 and Dalwhinnie 25 as the stand out drams, both available from the Diageo stand..

My overall thoughts on this show was that it was a great day out, enjoyed by everyone, and I look forward to next year..  I look forward to bumping into other enthusiastic people like Steve and the lads from “The fellowship of the stills”. A big thank you to Eddie,Amanda and joe from the whisky lounge..

I was there and I do believe we spoke while you was working on the Paul John stand, your enthusiasm was electric and I must admit you convinced me to buy the select cask unpeated. Than you
