SPICE KING.. ( wemyss malts)

This is the third expression I have reviewed from Wemyss malts, so far I have had the mighty Kiln Embers, the Peat chimney and tonight’s delight is the Spice King. This expression is a blended malt comprising various single malts based around some Island malts and Highland malts… This sample is bottled at 46%abv.

Nose…  This starts very clean and fresh, orange peel and baked pears drizzled in honey,  nectarines and apricot make an appearance, before long the spices take over with cinnamon and nutmeg prominent.

Palate… Certainly more spice on the palate,  it’s like an invasion of spice, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon all fighting for top honours,  a real subtle smokey flavour comes through, along with some oak and fresh fruits.

Finish.. A medium finish but very clean and intensely flavoursome.

Thoughts…  This is certainly up my street as they say… Some lovely flavours with a big spicy kick, no wonder they called it ” Spice King” .   This malt is no stranger to picking up awards , here are a few of them..,

Gold medal at Concours mondial de Bruxelles spirits 2015.

Silver medal at international wines and spirits challenge 2015.

Silver medal for the 12yo at San Francisco world spirits competition 2015.

Wemyss malts is an independent bottler and blender of the finest malts, the Wemyss family have been connected to the whisky industry dating back to the 19th century. At Wemyss Malts they choose the best malt whisky casks that the industry has to offer,  they do this by having thier ‘nosing and tasting panel’ pore over the many different casks maturing in distillery warehouses across Scotland. The tasting panel is led by both Isabella Wemyss and Master of the Quaich Charlie Maclean.  Once the casks have been chosen they are then designated  for either the blended malt range or if they are considered of outstanding quality, they will go into the Single Cask range. All the malts are identified by their natural taste and aromas, acting as a tasting note for what you might expect inside.
