This 21yo offering from Aberfeldy distillery is the flagship bottle from the core range, launched back in 2005 it has long been the benchmark for quality from the distillery..
The distillery is found in beautiful Scottish countryside on the edges of Loch Tay in Perthshire, and here is where the magic begins, 21 years ago ( at least ) this malt was laid to rest in casks so that you and I can fully enjoy all the delights that are to come. And of course only the finest casks are used to mature this spirit, sherry butts, bourbon barrels from both American and European oak are both used by the distillery..
The 21 yo is bottled at 40%Abv.
Nose.. First impressions are sweetness mixed with fruit.. Honey and poached pear, dates and candied orange.. Some dark chocolate notes and subtle heather and blossom notes. Vanilla notes eventually come through with coconut and toffee aromas.
Palate.. Quite creamy at first with a sherry dryness, even a little smoke effect .. Again fruity with a sweetness, subtle spices and more citrus notes cleanse the palate ready for the next wave of lovely notes to flood over the tounge..
Finish.. Medium, dry and fruity.
Thoughts.. It’s not hard to fall in love with this malt but.. And yes there is a but.. This could be absolutely AWSOME given a higher abv.. 40% does not do this malt justice.. At 40% this is good, it has complex flavours, it is well balanced and has a lovely nose, it just wants to be grown up.. It is after all 21yo. It deserves to play with the big boys, at 46% this would be in another league.. Is it worth buying ? Of course it is ! this is very very easy to drink and will bring a smile to your face, it deserves a spot on the shelf..
An impressive whisky, it’s brightens my day whenever I pour one of these. So thanks!

A very underestimated distillery, the 12is fairly plain but once you get to the older vintages they come alive and this one is one of my favourite Bottles.

Had this a few times and really enjoyed it, but I do think you have a point with the abv. I’d love to try this at full cask strength, I bet it is a lot fuller and flavoursome.
