As you might already know Paul John whisky hails from Goa in India, this fairly new whisky ( ok it’s a few years now) but it is still unknown to many is really starting to get noticed and when you consider this whisky is only 5-7 years old you will be amazed at just how damn good it is !!
Over the last 6-7 months I have been very lucky in that I was given the privilege to review the first ever whisky from them that had been given some time in an Oloroso sherry Butt, not only that but I have managed to review the whole core range and a few of the single casks.. This single cask is a chance to actually go back in time a little and review one of the first to be released..
This Paul John single cask P1 – 163 has been bottled at 57% abv this is Natural colour and NCF.. Although I’m not 100% on age I do believe it to be around the 5yo mark.. Just remember that due to the climate in India these casks will mature so much faster than in the colder climates..
Nose.. Starts off with a distinct malty tone and lots of wood spices, cinnamon, ginger and fresh oak chips play with fresh fruits, orange, stewed apples, poached pears and a little tropical note help bring a little sweetness along with caramel and subtle vanilla.
Palate.. Instantly you notice big spices and full on oak before you get those fruity notes.. Citrus peel and fruit salad sweets come to mind before a little toffee and more of those oak tannings come back.
Finish.. Hot and spicy..
Thoughts.. Where do I start with this one.. Ok compared to a more recent version, cask #1906 ( which happened to be my favourite malt in 2016 !! ) this gets blown out of the water but .. This is still extremely interesting, the spicy beast that is packed into this bottle is extremely lively and is like an untamed beast, its prickly and refuses to be subdued.. With lots of time to open it gets a little more fruity but in my opinion this is all about the spices and oaky notes.. It’s brilliance is it’s un-Edited boldness ( ok I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist.. )
The Paul John single cask P1-163..

You can definitely see how the quality hasn’t dropped but just got better.
