This limited release from the Speyside distillery is the first peated expression to be released, named FUMARE which is Latin for ” smokey” helps takes the distillery in a different direction. The distillery which was founded in 1962 by George Christie who also built this distillery, finally completing the build in 1987, no spirit was produced for another 3 years.. With a capacity of 600,000 litres per year the distillery is certainly not one of the biggest but prides itself on the quality of spirit it does produce.
This expression is a limited release of 18000 bottles and boasts natural colour and is non chill filtered, bottled at 46%abv and is presented in a quite elegant looking bottle..
Nose.. Subtle smoke mingles with soft fruits, and a hint of heather with rich honey.
Palate.. Gentle smoke , a selection of fresh fruits and soft honey notes all delight the senses while a hint of caramel gives a little sweetness.
Finish.. Soft with subtle oak and smoke.
Thoughts.. This is so soft and fruity and anyone who does not get on with those big peated expressions will find this one quite delightful, with its soft smoke and fresh fruity flavours along with lovely floral notes this can not offend anyone.. Definitely one for those late summer nights when you don’t want anything heavy to drink and although it is peated the peat and smoke are so subtle it won’t be a problem.. So worth a try..
My thanks go out to Paul from Spey whisky for the introduction to this dram..
