Invergordon 42yo. Batch 15.. That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

Grain whisky is here.. Shout it from the roof tops, shout it as loud as you can because it’s here to stay !!

The Invergordon distillery can be found nestled in the Highlands of Scotland and is considered by many to be one of the finest producers of grain whisky out there,  founded back in 1959, production started a few years later in 1961 and although the distillery has changed hands a few times it is now under the wings of Whyte and Mackay.

The distillery boasts a very impressive 36 million litres of alcohol produced per year from the 3 Coffey stills, which in turn produce an abv of 94% with a cask filling strength of 71% ..

Todays expression is a 42yo bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company at a strength of 48% with natural colour and NCF..

Nose.. Burnt caramel with toffee, gentle spices and warm apple pie. Subtle hints of chocolate and coffee rise on the back of waffles smothered in maple syrup and soft oak .

Palate.. Cinnamon, ginger and a little pepper ease you into those sweet notes like caramel, toffee and vanilla with the gentle hint of stewed apples and marshmallows smothered in chocolate.

Finish.. Lingering Oak spices.

Thoughts.. This is simply stunning whisky !!  Ok It is no secret that I really like grain whisky and this is no exception, the aromas are just so seductive and inviting and that is mirrored by a palate that  draws you in perfectly and a little too easily.

The 42 years this has spent in the cask has really allowed this whisky to extract every last drop of goodness from the oak and the cask/ casks might have been well used previously but it has had one last hurrah and has produced something special in this release..

My advice is don’t overlook these grain expressions because you are missing out on some rather special drams !!

I would really like to be able to try whisky like this one, shame it is a little above my budget.
