Auchentoshan…. One of my favourites of the whisky world, triple distilled and always one that I reach for, but just lately they have disappointed me.. The Distillery ( or should I point the finger at the corporate people behind them ) just seems determined to be all about cocktails and bartenders, forget the heritage and loyal customers as it’s all about the future.
Well that’s all fine and dandy but if it wasn’t for the single casks and bottles coming from the indies I’d have given up on them too, luckily for me there has been some absolutely belting bottlings released just lately and this is another in that list.. A little heads up from inside the Boutiquey camp ( ok it was announced on twitter) had me drooling over this latest release and when The world’s best Ambassador tells you “ you need this in your collection” then you listen and buy the bottle as soon as it’s released !! ( ok he might just be good at his job but I respect his advice or maybe I’m just a little too soft when it comes to Auchentoshan) Bottle was ordered, sample sorted just incase I didn’t open said bottle straight away and happiness is on its way again..
Bottled at 48.6 % and hailing from a single bourbon cask ( poss refill ) this is of course all natural with an outturn of just 135 bottles and carries a RRP of £132.95.
Nose.. Vanilla leads into those citrus notes Auchentoshan is so well known for ! A nuttiness follows along with dried grass, fresh blossom and a faint perfumed note.. Lemon drizzle cake, apple peel, soft butterscotch and heather honey all mingle with subtle spices.
Palate.. Soft with spices, citrus peel and a delicate hint of oak, apple pie and chocolate covered almonds all give this a feel of something I’ve missed for so long.. Honey gives a little sweetness while a little hint of tobacco hides in the background.
Finish.. Spices play with citrus notes to the very end..
Thoughts.. As long as there is whisky like this emerging from the distillery I’ll have faith.. A super complex and balanced whisky that just has you wishing for more and more… There are some stunning casks hiding away in the warehouses of Auchentoshan and for those who think the light and floral tastes are not for them then get your laughing gear round a single cask like this and tell me it’s not bloody good whisky !!
