There’s an E in these tri Teeling Whiskies

Teeling Whiskey

Teeling whisky can trace its heritage back to 1782 when Walter Teeling opened up a  distillery In Marrowbone lane in the  Liberties area of Dublin which was at the time named the “Golden Triangle “ due to the number of distilleries operating in that area.

The distillery was later bought out by the neighbouring company William Jameson & Company.

Jumping forward to more modern times  John Teeling a descendent of Walter Teeling purchased a facility which had been producing alcohol from potatoes, in 1989 the establishment was re opened after its conversion to make Malt whisky under the name of Cooley..

Cooley distillery was later sold to Beam Suntory with around 16,000 casks being retained as part of the deal.

In 2012 Jack Teeling launched the Teeling Whiskey brand and soon after brother Stephen Teeling joined the operation..

In 2015 the two brothers opened the Teeling distillery in Market square, Dublin, this was to be the first distillery to open up in Dublin for 125 years.

With the stocks of whisky produced at the distillery quietly sleeping the whisky that has been released under the Teeling name is almost certainly made up predominantly from the Cooley stocks purchased as part of the sale..

Teeling Distillery

The Distillery is set up with two wooden washbacks along with four stainless steel models, three stills hailing from Italy, the first is the wash still with it’s capacity of 15,000 litres, secondly the Intermediate still with a capacity of 10,000 litres and lastly the Spirit still which holds 9,000 litres.

Nose.. Fresh fruits and gentle spices rise gently before a soft sweetness starts to shine through.. Hints of vanilla, butterscotch and toffee mix nicely with a little honey that extenuate the freshness of the fruits and typical grainy notes.

Palate.. The spices lead the way with a soft sweetness underneath, hints of those fruits are there but it’s more about the kick of spice.

Finish.. Spicy but short..

Thoughts..This is a rather enjoyable youthful grain whisky.. The palate certainly shows the youthful side more that the nose does but don’t let that put you off..

There is still plenty to enjoy in this grain whiskey and it does have plenty to offer although in my opinion it does not feel as though those wine barrels have imparted a great deal of the previous contents into the flavour..

Nose.. Imagine walking through an apple orchard with the blossom in full bloom and early morning dew carpeting the grass, that fresh scent that just makes you feel alive..

Freshly peeled apples, Demerara sugar, orange peel, lemon drizzle cake and a spoonful of honey.

Palate.. A little more spice shows up but it has the added sweetness that you hope for. Cinnamon, butterscotch and apple crumble all come to mind with a nice vanilla custard.

Finish.. Spices with a twist of sweetness.

Thoughts.. I quite like this one, it’s very interesting and easy to drink.. There is enough depth and flavours to keep you interested and wanting a little more…

Teeling Single Malt

Company.. Teeling

Region.. Dublin, Ireland

Abv.. 46%

Casks.. Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon

This is also Non chill filtered.

Nose.. Fresh fruits and along with a little peppery note are first evident aromas, a touch of cinnamon, vanilla and somewhere in the distance you keep getting subtle hints of dried fruits.

Palate… A lot more spice shows up here with a real peppery kick.. Somewhere hiding in here is a sweetness but it is overpowered by the prickle..

Finish.. spicy.

Thoughts.. I can’t help but feel a little disappointed in this one.. The Nose certainly promised a lot more than the palate delivered.. Don’t  get me wrong this certainly is not a bad whiskey, far from it,  it just felt like it came up short and out of the three expressions tried today this certainly didn’t do enough to make me want this over the other two !!

The Small batch has intrigued me the most but very closely followed by the grain and unfortunately I think this single malt entered the wheel barrow race rather than the 100m sprint..

With thanks to Maverick Drinks for the samples.

Always thought Irish whisky was a little bland but over the last year or so I have started to appreciate it a little more.

I might have to try some Teeling Whiskey, my only other taste of Irish Whiskey was in a pub many years ago. Very disappointed with the flavour.
