Glendronach Cask 5896 Batch 17

Glendronach

Found nestled in the Highland area of Scotland this iconic distillery is well known for its big sherries whiskies that are now sought after the world over..

Founded back in 1826 this distillery has always been loyal to the sherried style of maturing whisky, those big flavours and bold flavours are the backbone of the distillery but more recently they have started to throw out the odd curve ball..

Todays review is for another of those left field releases with this single cask expression hailing from one of the Port pipes that have now become just as sought after as the big PX or Oloroso styles.

Nose.. Dried fruits and cherry tunes lead into dark chocolate, candied orange, dried tobacco leaf, liquorice and a soft herbal note lurking in the background.

Palate.. Oak leads into a more spicy palate with pepper, ginger and a little nutmeg all showing before those dried fruits start to show up. A delicate hint of vanilla shows up along with toffee apples, chocolate coated nuts and glacé cherries.

Finish.. Spices and oak dominate

Thoughts.. This is certainly one of those drams that offer two very different experiences, the nose screams sweet, seductive and sensual with all the promise of some exotic experience that will last forever but the palate is robust and all about the spices that allow the sweetness a little time to showcase themselves every now and again..

As soon as you pour this into the glass those aromas just rise and really do make you want to dive right in, there is certainly a very nice freshness to it along with an elegance that only comes with the mature nature of older liquid.

Sample provided by Glendronach.

Whiskies like you’re describing can be fabulous! What an interesting read, though I fear that trying to find a bottle might be hard.
