Glen Marnoch
Many of us still strive to find the bargains that can be found, some refuse to pay above the budgets they set and others just want to moan about things no matter what they cost but when you get close to Christmas the festive feeling starts to hit then you can’t really look too much past the bargain whisky that Aldi have started to release annually..
The supermarket that over the past few years has offered us bargains like the 28year old that was released a few years back and carried with it the rumour it hailed from none other than Mortlach, last years 29 year old was a little tamer and unfortunately had also dropped in Abv to the industry minimum 40%which did make it feel a little thinner but at the price it’s hard to really offer too many negatives.
The Glen Marnoch is a Sudo name for Aldi’s own bottling and in this case this is a single malt from an undisclosed Speyside Distillery..
These expressions retail for £39.99 yes that’s £39.99 for a 25 year old single malt whisky from one of Scotland’s favourable regions, Speyside.
Now there will be some downsides but just look at the price again and this has to give it a little wiggle room with the criticism that some critics will no doubt try to throw at this..
25 Year Old Glen Marnoch
Distillery.. Unknown
Region.. Speyside
Age.. 25 years
Abv.. 40%
Price.. £39.99
Nose.. First thing noticeable is the fresh apple peels and poached pears that mingle with vanilla, toffee and caramel notes.. A hint of pineapple and coconut show along with a very subtle chocolate and orange peel aroma before cinnamon and fresh ginger finally arrive.
Palate.. Again the fruits are evident along with the sweetness but the spices are a little more prominent here. Pepper, ginger and oak offer up most of the initial notes.
Finish.. Spices and Oak
Thoughts.. £39.99 !! I don’t really need to say too much more, do I ?
This is no world beater, it’s not going to make time stand still ! It’s not a sit down and sing hallelujah moment but it is a bargain malt that is good enough to purchase and enjoy !!
There will be some who still expect to receive the type of whisky that stops you in your tracks and will think it’s not worth the £39.99 price tag but in today’s market you do not really get too much for £39.99 and let me say again this is a 25 year old single malt for £39.99….
Ok there are a few niggles which include the 40% Abv and it does feel a little thin at times but I can’t really knock it too much because it is what it is..
It’s £39.99 and it’s worth it !!
Just bought the last 2 bottles for £20 a pop now that’s blended money
even a whisky snob wouldn’t turn their nose up at that

Greetings! Very useful review with lot of good notes, in this particular about flavour! It is the little aroma that will make the most significant changes. Thanks for sharing!

I managed to find last years but it seems I have missed this one in my local store . Thank you for the review and helping the pain of not getting a bottle go deeper.

With a classic like Highland Park 12 on offer at £25 though, is it worth spending the cash on this 25yo?

Nice write up and interesting that a 25yo is that price. Would LOVE to know the distillery!

Interesting ones and great write up. When you’ve got Highland Park 12yo at £25 in the pre-Christmas sales, is it enough to spend the cash?

I have read the reviews and decided this one is not for me though it might be a bargain the profile does still seem to be lacking.
