Glendronach 1992 Cask #5897 27 Year Old Port Pipe

Its that time of year again when all the Glendronach fans start to loose their shit.. Panic sets in and the rush down to their local whisky shop to try to reserve a bottle or two begins.. I on the other hand remain calm, ( picks up phone, calls shop, reserves bottles, job done) Now where was i.. O yes, Glendronach single cask releases, sherried whiskies and o wait.. Port Pipe, ok, pours whisky into glass, smiles turn into grins with a gentle nodding of head…

Nose.. Elegance is an understatement here.. Victoria plums, toffee and dates escort you into a state of ecstasy before summer fruits and chocolate covered donuts dunked in coffee and a packet of ginger nut biscuits brings a rewarding smile.

Palate.. The honey notes found gives a delicious sweetness that leads into a contradicting bitterness from coffee bean and citrus peels. Those Victoria plums draw you in and demand some attention that only subsides when the elegance of Bitter chocolate and a handful of dates that have shown you the inner secrets of this beauty..

Finish.. Long with warming spices

Thoughts.. This is one of those drams that just leave you salivating and wanting just a little more.. There is just something rather soothing and welcoming to this dram, its like coming home but to a home that isn’t yours, but its still so familiar. The warmth is down to those ginger notes and that feeling of being left alone to explore this whisky is exactly how it should be..

Once you strip this whisky down to its bare bones and taste it blind as it gives itself to you, those closely guarded secrets just come flooding down upon you and you then know the pleasure is all at your fingertips..

Those big bold flavours slowly give way to a very warm and soft backbone that is the very essence of this whisky, then as you hold the glass close to you and the aromas engulf you, this first impression is impossible to forget, its one of those things that as you make your way through this journey you will return to on many occasions. It is a lifetime of waiting for that one moment that has you stuck in time, the moment that you searched for, then you realise you just found the whisky that takes you by the hand and wipes all the worries away..

This is a secret that will soon be upon the world, it might shock a few, it might change things for many, it probably will surprise a lot of people.. Glendronach do whisky in Port casks.. who’d have funked it…

With thanks to Glendronach for this official sample..
