Caol ila is owned by Diageo and is one of the distilleries found on Islay, we already know what to expect from this distillery and that should be a little peaty beast, but as we know the distillery has produced some non peated whisky in the past so you never know !!
The Distillery was founded way back in 1846 by Hector Henderson but soon changed hands when Norman Buchanan who also owned the Jura Distillery purchased it in 1854. In 1863 the distillery was once again sold when Bulloch Lade and Co purchased it, this company then went into administration in 1920 and a group of business men formed the Caol Ila Distillery Company who ran the Distillery until 1927 when the Distillers Company purchased controlling shares before the Scottish Malt Distillers ltd obtained full ownership..
Closing for the war between 1942 and 1945 due to restrictions on barley for Distillers the distillery re opened and ran until 1972 when the entire distillery was demolished and then re opened in 1974 as a much larger operation..
Batch 12 – Caol Ila 11 year old
Distillery.. Caol Ila
Age.. 11 years
Outturn.. 1,489 Bottles
Nose.. Smouldering wood and ash greet the nose, Sea spray washing over your face whilst you walk and kick through the bunches of seaweed laying on the beach.. Old damp rope, the smokehouse that usually has kippers drying within and a soft sweetness arising in the form of lemon drizzle cake.
Palate.. If i knew what it was like to lick an ashtray then i imagine this would be exactly what you would taste, Ashy and damp wood with a salty element running through. Spices that are loosing their strength make an appearance whilst a soft fruity note lurks under that smokey jacket.
Finish.. Smokey with a soft spiciness.
Thoughts.. Caol Ila is one of those peated expressions that i seem to get on with, all those notes from the more bolder expressions located on Islay seem to overpower a lot of the more subtle notes for me but these Caol Ila’s always allow them to be showcased.. Its Caol Ila and that’s all i need to say..
