It is safe to say Japanese whisky is sought after.. Some releases are commanding rather ridiculous price tags, and when you consider what some of it is then you have to scratch your head and wonder why !
Riding on the back of some superb releases many years ago the more modern whiskies are definitely getting the rewards from a market that is just going gaga over anything that hits the shelfs.
This release is interesting in that yes it is a blend but o my golly gosh its a 21 year old blend of Japanese whiskies and sitting at £179 give or take a few pence whereas the Nikka Taketsuru 21 blend sits at £465 !! Now ok the latter is blended malt rather than blended whisky but at well over double the price you have to think the boutiquey bottle might just be a bargain… Obviously depending if its any good !
Batch 5 – 21 year old blended whisky #1
Age.. 21 years
Outturn.. 3,257 bottles
Nose.. As you dive into this you cant help but get a mixture of dates, raisins, black forest gateau and a subtle hint of damp pine needles. Candied oranges, after eight mints and a soft hint of a freshly opened packet of Haribo sweets gives this a very inviting nose.
Palate.. Gingerbread biscuits, peanut brittle and brandy snaps give this a delicious start before those spices start to muscle in, add to this a soft tobacco note, coffee and dark chocolate flavours and you have a very tasty dram.
Finish.. Spices with a soft sweetness resonate
Thoughts.. I cant help but smile when drinking this whisky, the fact its 21 years and its Japanese for under 200 notes ( this is a 50cl bottle ) just astonishes me still.. The balance is wonderful and the aromas / palate are as right up there..
The big dilemma is what distilleries are within, forget the price tag as that really cant be argued within the modern climate for Japanese whiskies.. So what distilleries are within ? Simple answer is I don’t know, i would assume its from either Suntory or Nikka Whisky Distilling Co but there are a limited amount of other options..
I suppose the question should be more like.. Does it matter ??
